30-Day Challenge

(6) Where Mud Becomes Slush

Today I learned that photographers are loonier people than runners. I wanted to go for a walk on the MKT trail, and was hoping that there would be bikers and joggers along the trail…as there have been every other time I’ve walked it. But today the MKT was empty- not a person to be seen. This is probably because it was overcast and kind of rainy, but that didn’t stop me from going to take pictures! I’m thinking the running population of Columbia needs to step it up a little. (:

The focus on this picture is all weird, which is unfortunate (I am still working on perfecting the art of taking low-angled pictures while wearing a knee brace.

(5) Somebody's Watching Me

I am endlessly fascinated by the blinking red lights on the tall smokestacks of the power plant on campus. They look so ominous, especially when the smokestacks are, well, smoking.

On the other hand, the lights on the lower smokestacks aren’t intimidating at all, and come across very Wall-E-like:

(3) Squaring Off

I am supposed to be doing any number of things–researching, writing, working on my assistantship project–but I’d much rather keep working on last Sunday’s New York Times crossword puzzle. I’m about 3/4 done as of now, but the clues that are left are (of course) the extra-frustrating ones. I tried to find the puzzle online so you too could work on it (the theme is “The Football Fan”), but crosswords on the Times’ website apparently require subscription.

I wish I had a better offering for day 3, but my camera battery was on its last legs, and, as my charger seems to have wandered off (tomorrow is Epic Quest For The Charger Day), I went ahead and grabbed this shot while I could.

(2) Baby, It's Cold Outside

Didn’t want to leave my house this morning to go up to campus…so I lazed around till the afternoon. I walked outside to find that most of my neighbors had had the same thought I did; half the cars in the lot still had snow covering them and icicles dripping down off their fronts. In related news, I wonder how many different pictures I can make of things I find within 100 feet of my apartment.

(1) Sunday Details

Jumping on the bandwagon of the 30 Days, 30 Pictures project that Vivian and David Rees’ Picture Story class are working on. I’m starting this because a) I’m not shooting much at all this semester, since I’m writing a thesis, and b) it’s a great way for me to count down the days until I get my knee brace off.

Hurry, March 15!

That said, I’m very glad I’m not actually IN a shooting class this semester; while I have much (much) more flexibility in my left leg than I did even a week ago, it’s hard for me to make low-angle pictures and to climb around in order to get the best vantage point. Oh well. I’ll try my best!

Last week they didn’t bag it in blue, and I almost couldn’t find my New York Times. Crisis averted this week.

My parents sent me an Edible Arrangement for Valentine’s Day! Nom nom nom nom.

Columbia has started using salt instead of cinders to melt away snow.

Nothing but Noodles

When my dad was visiting me last week, he made fun of me for buying pasta when we went grocery shopping. This was because he’d already seen my pasta pantry and didn’t understand how I could possibly need more noodles in my life.

(Actually, this picture doesn’t even include the two boxes of whole wheat pasta that I haven’t opened yet. I only use the jars for leftovers.)

I like having a well-stocked kitchen as much as the next person, but I REALLY like having lots of options in the pasta department, which is why I always buy a box or two when I go to the store. It’s like a pasta compulsion. I can’t help it.

Tonight I made one of my most favorite dinners—pasta with kidney beans and tomato sauce (the kind with olives in it- that’s key)—and was feeling very inspired by my fellow photogs updating their blogs every day, so I decided to take some photos while I was cooking.

Protein!

Underwater noodles

Pasta in a giant teacup. It’s very portable.
